Jim Leyland will manage Tigers in 2013

Leyland will return for his eighth season at the helm in Detroit.

Jim McIsaac

After weeks of speculation as to his future with Detroit, Jim Leyland is expected to return as Tigers manager for at least the 2013 season, per the Detroit News. No official announcement has been made, but indications are that a statement from the club could come as early as Tuesday. (UPDATE: The Tigers have made Leyland's 2013 return official, and his entire coaching staff has been invited back as well.)

Leyland would not confirm his status when he last spoke to the media on Monday, stating that it “will all play out soon enough”. It is unclear at the moment what the hold up has been in negotiations, as several players, general manager Dave Dombrowski and Leyland himself have all indicated their desire to keep things as they are.

The 67-year-old has been an MLB manager for 21 years -- the last seven with Detroit -- and has one World Series title to his credit. The Tigers have only had one losing season under Leyland’s watch and have made the playoffs three times, advancing at least to the Championship Series each time. Leyland has two AL pennants as the Tigers’ skipper and owns a 607-528 win-loss record with the club overall.
