Freshman Jonathan Wallace to start at QB for Auburn

The Auburn Tigers will hand the ball to a freshman, their third starting quarterback of the season, to try and find a spark for one of the country’s worst offenses.

Don McPeak-US PRESSWIRE

In the midst of a historically bad season, the Auburn Tigers are making a dramatic shift at quarterback, electing to start freshman Jonathan Wallace this Saturday against New Mexico State. Auburn has also announced that former starter Kiehl Frazier will serve as Wallace's backup, while Clint Moseley, who started two games for the Tigers this season, is injured. The emergency third quarterback will be Ricardo Lewis, a wide receiver who played QB in high school.

The 1-7 Tigers are among the worst offenses in the entire country (284 total yards a game, ranked 123rd nationally; 16.4 points a game, ranked 122nd). Wallace is a dual threat who has appeared in situational downs this season, especially in the red zone. He’s 7-of-10 passing for 133 yards, and also the team’s fourth-leading rusher with a 3.9 yards-per-carry average. Frazier has a 54.4 completion percentage and just two TD passes compared to 8 INTs. Moseley has a 63.3 completion percentage with 3 INTs and 1 TD.

Auburn is 0-6 in SEC play this season, and at 1-7 overall are off to their worst start in more than 60 years. Auburn is currently in the midst of a five-game losing streak (all against SEC opponents), with their most recent loss a 63-21 blowout loss at home to Texas A&M.
