Rockies set manager pool at six candidates

Colorado has narrowed their search down to six potential managers.

The Colorado Rockies have completed the exploratory stage in their search for a new manager, narrowing down their list of viable candidates to six men, per the Denver Post. While the Colorado front office could still potentially bring in a dark horse candidate, the next Rockies manager will likely be one of the following:

  • Jason Giambi: veteran first baseman; no managerial experience
  • Tom Runnells: Rockies bench coach; managed Expos from 1991-92; six seasons in minors
  • Walt Weiss: former All-Star shortstop; no professional managerial experience
  • Jerry Manuel: managed White Sox from 1998-2003; Mets from 2008-2010
  • Pete Mackanin: interim manager of Pirates in 2005 and Reds in 2007; Phillies bench coach from 2009-2012
  • Matt Williams: former All-Star third baseman; no managerial experience

With the Rockies now in the evaluation phase of the manager selection process, team owner Dick Monfort, general manager Dan O’Dowd and assistant GM Bill Geivett will meet some time this week to discuss the six candidates. The Rockies have not set a deadline for when they will select a new manager, but one imagines the team does not want to get too far into the offseason without someone at the helm.
