Terry Francona tells ESPN that reports he will manage the Cleveland Indians are very premature.

Ken Rosenthal has reported that Francona is set to become Cleveland’s next manager, with the announcement expected to come on Monday. Francona had the following to say about Rosenthal’s report (via ESPN):

“The report is very premature. When there’s a decision to make, I’ll make it.”

Francona maintained that he does have interest in the position, contrary to rumors that he was interviewing only as a favor to Indians president Mark Shapiro.

He worked in the Cleveland front office in 2001, and maintains a close relationship with both Shapiro and general manager Chris Antonetti. Francona was also a member of the Indians during his playing career, spending the 1988 season in Cleveland.

Francona managed the Boston Red Sox from 2004-2011, leading the Red Sox to World Series titles in 2004 and 2007. His first managerial experience was a stint in charge of the Philadelphia Phillies from 1997-2000.
