Rockies dismiss hitting coach Carney Lansford, third base coach

Lansford and Dauer may be the first of many following Jim Tracy’s departure.

Chris Humphreys-US PRESSWIRE - Presswire

The Colorado Rockies fired hitting coach Carney Lansford and third base coach Rich Dauer on Monday evening, just a day after manager Jim Tracy announced his resignation. Lansford and Dauer were the only two from the coaching staff let go Monday, but more personnel moves could be at hand soon enough, per the Denver Post:

No other changes are planned on the major-league staff for now, but that could change once a new manager is in place. If Mark Wiley is hired as the director of pitching operations, as expected, Bob McClure becomes the heavy favorite to become the big-league pitching coach.

Lansford, who was in his second year as hitting coach for the Rockies, led the club to a league-best .274 batting average this season. As could be expected, Colorado fared much better at home than on the road, hitting just .241/.291/.371 away from Coors Field. The long-time third baseman for the Red Sox, Angels and A's previously served as hitting coach for the Giants from 2008-09.

Dauer was in his fourth year as Colorado's third base coach and seventh year with the organization overall. The former Orioles infielder also served as the club's infield coach and was in charge of defensive positioning. Dauer served as the bench coach in Milwaukee for three seasons before joining the Rockies organization.

It is likely the Rockies will wait until hiring a new manager before naming Lansford and Dauer’s replacements. Bill Geivett, the club’s director of major-league operations, says the team has no timetable for their manager search but believes the Rockies will have a new hire in place by no later than the December winter meetings.
