On Tuesday, Felix Baumgartner was set to free fall through the Earth’s atmosphere as part of the Red Bull Stratos team. Weather conditions delayed the start time of the jump, but the launch was scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m. ET. Baumgartner suited up and was en route via balloon launch before the mission was aborted for the day. Unfavorable winds have postponed the free fall.

As Ben Kersey at The Verge reports, this jump will establish a new world record for a free fall. The feat will certainly push the limits of what human beings are capable of, even if the specifics are as mind-boggling as they are terrifying.

Baumgartner’s jump marks the first attempt that a human being has jumped from an altitude of 120,000 feet outside of a craft, with the previous record achieved in 1960 at an height of 102,800 feet.

Baumgartner is expected to reach supersonic speeds as he completes his jump.
