Yankees planning to make qualifying offer to Nick Swisher

The New York Yankees will likely make a qualifying offer to Nick Swisher but hope he rejects it in favor of a multi-year deal elsewhere.

Nick Swisher has been with the New York Yankees for four years, but he may have played his last game in pinstripes.

The Yankees are apparently planning to make a qualifying offer to Swisher, a free agent, but with the hope that he rejects it, according to Jon Heyman. The qualifying offer would be for about $13.3 million for one year, but Swisher will likely field multiple multi-year deals this winter, his foray into free agency.

The idea is that the Yankees would like Swisher to reject the offer so they could then reap an extra first-round draft pick as compensation when he signs elsewhere.

Swisher came to the Yankees in an off-season trade before the 2009 season after spending a disappointing 2008 with the Chicago White Sox. In his four years in the Bronx, Swisher hit an impressive .268/.367/.483 while averaging more than 25 home runs per season. Swisher will turn 32 this month, and he could be one of the most sought-after outfielders on the free agent market this winter.
