Chris Woodward retires, takes position with Mariners

Chris Woodward, who spent parts of two seasons with the Seattle Mariners, has ended his playing career and will serve as the team’s minor league infield coordinator.

Journeyman utility infielder Chris Woodward has retired as a player and will work in the Seattle Mariners organization as a minor league infield coordinator, according to Greg Johns of Mariners.com.

The 36-year-old Woodward spent parts of 2009 and 2010 with the Mariners, but played the bulk of his career with the Toronto Blue Jays. He was drafted by the Blue Jays in the 54th round in 1994 and spent a total of 13 seasons with the club. He last played in the majors with the Blue Jays in 2011 and spent the 2012 season with their AAA affiliate, the Las Vegas 51s.

Woodward made his career with a good infield glove, so he seems a natural fit as an infield instructor. In his 12-year Major League career, he hit .239/.296/.365 with 33 home runs. His best season came in 2002 with the Blue Jays when he hit .276 with 13 home runs in 350 plate appearances. He logged time at every position on the diamond except pitcher and catcher.
