Jay Bruce is not a man who plays his cards close to the vest. According to Mark Sheldon of Reds.com, he has asked the Reds about a contract extension that would keep him in Cincinnati for the rest of his career.

Cincinnati Reds outfielder Jay Bruce wants to be a Red for life, so he asked his agent to discuss a contract extension with the team. His current contract runs out after 2016.

“[Bruce] made it clear that he wants to be a Red his entire career,” Bruce’s agent, Matt Sosnick, said. “[Joey] Votto is in his wedding in a couple of weeks and he wants to play with him. He has a lot of friends there. He and his fiancee are very comfortable in Cincinnati. Jay asked me to approach the team and see if something is there. We’ll see if the team has any interest.”
Bruce signed a contract extension with the team after the 2010 season worth $51 million over six years. He will be eligible for free agency after the 2016 season at the earliest. It is very unorthodox for a player to approach his team about a contract extension with four years left on his current deal (plus a club-option for 2017), but perhaps Bruce is on a jag for lifetime commitments.
The 25-year-old Bruce had a great year for the Reds in 2012, setting career highs with 34 home runs, 99 RBIs, 89 runs scored and a .514 slugging percentage. He was an All-Star, a Gold Glove finalist and he finished tenth in MVP voting.
