Report: Melky Cabrera signing with Blue Jays

Jamie Squire

It seems that the remaking of the Toronto Blue Jays is continuing apace. According to ESPNDeportes.com's Enrique Rojas, the Blue Jays are adding ex-batting titlist Melky Cabrera to the mix:

El jardinero dominicano Melky Cabrera, quien cumplió una sanción de 50 partidos por violar el programa de sustancias de Grandes Ligas este año, habría acordado un contrato de dos años y $16 millones de dólares con los Azulejos de Toronto, dijo una fuente familiar a ESPNDeportes.com.

My Spanish is a little rusty, but I believe the takeaway is that Cabrera's going to sign, or has signed already, a two-year contract with the Blue Jays, for $16 million. Which means that if the Jays' blockbuster deal with the Marlins goes through as planned, in the space of a week they'll have added left fielder Melky Cabrera, shortstop Jose Reyes, and starting pitchers Mark Buehrle and Josh Johnson. Considering that among the Jays' biggest weaknesses last season were left field, shortstop, and starting pitching, these moves would seem to bode well for the club's immediate future.

While the Orioles are due for a serious case of the regressions next season, the Red Sox are likely to improve. With the Yankees and Rays presumably steaming along as usual, the American League East is well-poised to re-assert itself as Major League Baseball's toughest division.

Last season, Cabrera batted .346 and garnered All-Star Game MVP honors in his first season with the San Francisco Giants. But his season ended on the 14th of August, when he drew a 50-game suspension for violating Major League Baseball’s drug policy. Cabrera was eligible for activation during the postseason, but the Giants declined that opportunity (and wound up doing pretty well anyway).
