South Florida-Miami: Bobby Eveld injured in first quarter after burning redshirt

With the injury to BJ Daniels, USF coach Skip Holtz made the decision to remove Bobby Eveld’s redshirt and start him against Miami. Eveld lasted two possessions before leaving with an injury. The decision could cost him a year of eligibility.

To say that the Skip Holtz era at South Florida has been frustrating, both for him and fans, would be an understatement. After a hot opening season, it looked like Holtz would be the guy to take USF to the next level. The following two seasons have been a disaster, with the Bulls winning just two Big East conference games in two years and are now on the brink of missing the postseason in back to back years.

Holtz might have reached a new low today. With BJ Daniels injured and out at quarterback, Holtz had to decide between the season’s backup, Matt Floyd, and Bobby Eveld. Eveld has been redshirting for the 2012 season so that in 2013, he’d be a junior and have two years of eligibility remaining. Holtz, desperate for a win today, opted to burn Eveld’s redshirt and start him at quarterback today at Miami. The problem? Eveld injured the AC joint in his left shoulder on the Bulls’ second possession of the game. Now, Eveld’s remaining eligibility will be in question.

Eveld will likely apply for a medical redshirt. His application will be denied, initially, because a player who plays in the second half of the season is almost always denied a medical redshirt claim. USF and the Big East could then appeal the denial to the NCAA, but again, it’s highly unlikely to be approved. Skip Holtz was given a contract extension last April. You would think he might avoid desperation moves like this, thinking he has some degree of job security. Instead, his decision to play Eveld in the 10th game of the season could cost him a year of eligibility.
