Cubs sign Shawn Camp on 1-year contract

The veteran right-hander will return to Chicago for a second season.

Mike Stobe

The Chicago Cubs got their offseason started last week by shoring up their rotation, signing right-hander Scott Baker on a one-year deal. Now the Cubbies have taken the first step towards bolstering their bullpen, agreeing to a one-year, $1.35 million contract to bring back righty reliever Shawn Camp, per MLB.com.

The Cubs’ only free agent this offseason, Camp can also receive up to $200,000 in performance bonuses.

After four solid seasons with the Toronto Blue Jays, the 37-year-old Camp was signed by the Seattle Mariners in February as a free agent but was released before the end of spring training. The Cubs signed the right-hander to a minor-league contract three days after his release, and he was awarded a spot on the Opening Day roster.

The right-hander made an MLB-high 80 appearances for the Cubs in 2012, posting a 3.59 ERA and 2.57 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 77⅔ innings. Now a nine-year veteran, Camp owns a career 4.29 ERA in 566 big-league innings.
