Report: David Ortiz signing with Red Sox for 2 years, $26 million

The Boston Red Sox have reportedly agreed with their longtime DH David Ortiz on a two-year deal worth $26 million.

Just hours after the Boston Red Sox made a qualifying offer to free agent David Ortiz, the two sides have reportedly agreed to a new two-year deal worth $26 million, as first reported by Marino Pepen. Rob Bradford of WEEI.com adds that incentives could push the value of the contract to $30 million.

It is a much less contentious outcome than what happened last winter, when Ortiz agreed to accept the Red Sox’ one-year arbitration offer after lobbying hard for a multi-year deal. The 16-year veteran responded with a strong if truncated season, hitting .318/.415/.611 and smashing 23 home runs in 90 games. He made the All-Star team and was on pace for his best season in years, but an Achilles injury cut it short.

The Red Sox’ tumultuous season has mercifully ended, and now the rebuilding process begins. Re-signing Ortiz was a top priority for the team, as he has been with the club for 10 seasons and they really value his leadership. Of course, the fact that he hits so well is pretty important, too.
