Tigers reportedly targeting Stephen Drew, could trade Jhonny Peralta

The Detroit Tigers could look to upgrade at the shortstop position by adding Stephen Drew, but would first need to deal with their incumbent, Jhonny Peralta.

Many teams are interested in free agent shortstop Stephen Drew, including the Detroit Tigers, reports Jon Heyman of CBS Sports. The trouble is, they're already paying Jhonny Peralta $6 million in 2013 to man the position for them. In order to get Drew, they would need to deal with Peralta first.

The Arizona Diamondbacks have shown some interest this winter in Peralta. It would be an interesting scenario, as Drew was drafted by and spent his entire career with the Diamondbacks until being traded to the Oakland A's in August.

Peralta had a down year in 2012 after an All-Star campaign in 2011. He hit only .239/.305/.384 with 13 home runs.

The New York Yankees are also reported to have interest in Drew, despite the presence of Derek Jeter. They are apparently not worried about Jeter's health, but rather are interested in Drew as a super-utility player. Drew has never played anywhere but shortstop, and would presumably like to continue doing so. But he could be lured to the Bronx in an attempt to build his value back up with a winning team.

The Boston Red Sox could also have interest, as they have traded off shortstops Marco Scutaro, Jed Lowrie and Mike Aviles in the last year. Prospect Jose Iglesias may not be ready to take over.
