Rangers and Cubs swap Jake Brigham, Barret Loux

Loux heads to the Cubs while Brigham will return to Texas. Brigham was originally part of the Rangers’ organization, but was sent to the Cubs in the Geovany Soto deal.

The Texas Rangers and Chicago Cubs swapped pitchers on Tuesday, with Barret Loux heading to Chicago and Jake Brigham heading back to Texas, according to Carrie Muskat of MLB.com. The Cubs will also receive a player to be named later. Brigham will return to Texas, who traded him to the Cubs in the Geovany Soto deal on July 31.

Loux was originally selected by the Arizona Diamondbacks with the sixth pick in the first round of the 2010 draft, but was subsequently declared a free agent by Major League Baseball when injury issues surfaced after the draft. He then signed with the Rangers in November of that year. In two seasons in the Rangers' system, he has posted 3.62 ERA with 227 strikeouts and just 75 walks in 236 innings. He spent the 2012 season with double-A Frisco.

Brigham has spent the last two seasons in double-A, struggling to control walks and home runs. He has posted a 4.61 ERA and a 1.426 WHIP in 242 total innings. He was only able to start two games for the Cubs after the trade, however, due to an elbow strain. The two teams agreed to revisit the trade after the season, so one can assume that Loux is meant as a substitute for Brigham in the Soto trade.
