Andy Pettitte likely to return for Yankees

Pettitte hasn’t told the Yankees his plans, but is expected to pitch in 2013.

According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, the Yankees are confident that Andy Pettitte will return to the club for the 2013 season. Pettitte, 40, came out of retirement in 2012 after sitting out the 2011 season.

He started 12 games in 2012 and went 5-4 with a 2.87 ERA. Pettitte struck out 69 batters in 75⅓ innings. He missed two-and-a half months last season after being struck by a Casey Kotchman line drive which broke his left fibula on June 27th.

Pettitte has gone 245-142 with a 3.86 ERA over his 17 seasons, 14 of which he spent with the Yankees. The veteran left-hander has started 44 postseason games, including 13 in the World Series. The five-time World Champion has gone 19-11 in the postseason with a 3.81 ERA.

Pettitte made $2.5 million last season and Sherman speculates that he will want “much more” than that in 2013.
