Yankees ‘confident’ they will re-sign Ichiro

The Yankees want him back, and Ichiro wants to return to the Bronx.

The New York Yankees don't seem to be sweating their right field situation, as they are confident they can re-sign Ichrio, according to Jon Heyman. And at the same time Ichiro would like to return to the Bronx, so it is difficult at this point to see how it could fall apart.

One possible snag could be compensation. Ichiro made $18 million last year in the final season of a five-year, $90 million deal. The 39-year-old will surely have to take a pay cut to sign with anyone, and the Yankees are no exception. Just how much of a pay cut he is willing to take, and how much the Yankees are willing to offer, could toss a wrench in the works.

Ichiro had a renaissance after moving to New York last July, hitting a robust .322/.340/.454 in his two months with the Yankees. Prior to the trade, he showed noticeable signs of age, slumping to a .261 batting average in his 12th year with the Seattle Mariners.
