Grand Canyon University to join WAC in 2013

The Grand Canyon Antelopes become the sixth team in the WAC.

Christopher Hanewinckel-US PRESSWIRE

The Western Athletic Conference (WAC) announced on Tuesday that Grand Canyon University will join the conference officially on July 1, 2013, after accepting the terms of their membership.

Grand Canyon still has to complete the reclassification process as it is currently a Division II school. Once that is complete, the Antelopes will begin participating in regular season competition in 2013-14 but still won’t be eligible for championships or postseason play. They will, however, play a WAC schedule while it makes its transition from Division II to Division I in all sports.

Grand Canyon joins current WAC members Cal State-Bakersfield, University of Idaho, New Mexico State, Seattle University and Utah Valley University as the sixth member of the conference.

The Grand Canyon athletic department has 16 sponsored sports teams on campus.

Grand Canyon’s baseball team was an affiliate member of the WAC for four seasons (1995-98), winning the 1998 North Division championship.
