The Miami Hurricanes surprised the No. 13 Michigan State Spartans on Wednesday night, outshooting them in a 67-59 win.
Miami moved the ball around well, with three men collecting 15 or more points. Trey McKinney-Jones led things with 18 points, while Durand Scott and Shane Larkin added 15 each. Reggie Johnson picked up a double double, adding 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Turnovers have plagued recent Spartan efforts, but they weren’t the problem against Miami. Michigan State had only 11 turnovers, slightly worse than Miami’s 10 but well below recent Spartan numbers. Where Miami took control was in making their shots count, and keeping the Spartans from establishing a rhythm. The Hurricanes shot 47.7 percent from the floor, including 9-of-16 on three-pointers. In contrast, Michigan State took more shots, 59 to 44, but only made 40.7 percent of them, with 6-of-14 shooting from beyond the arc.
Keith Appling led the Spartans in scoring with 15 points. Travis Trice make a return, but he had only nine points on 3-of-6 shooting.
Michigan State next faces the Nicholls St. Colonials and Miami will face the UMass Minutemen, while the ACC-Big Ten Challenge continues with Georgia Tech at Illinois, Boston College at Penn State and Ohio State at Duke.
