Rangers remain ‘flexible’ in approach to Josh Hamilton

GM Jon Daniels says the Rangers will approach negotiations with open minds and several factors to focus on.

The Texas Rangers are going to make an offer to Josh Hamilton. But that doesn't mean they won't keep an open mind.

General Manager Jon Daniels said Thursday to ESPN Radio Dallas that his club will be flexible in its negotiations with the now free-agent outfielder.

“If you want something to work, you’ve got to go into it with some flexibility,” Daniels said. There would be a lot of factors involved in the kind of deal the club aspires for. “If you go into it with no flexibility, you’re not going to get that deal done.”

The Rangers agreed with Hamilton to have him test the waters of the market in order to get a sense of his value and then he would go back and talk to the Rangers.

“My sense is that the market is starting to move and we’ll see some free agent signings,” Daniels said. “I would expect things would start moving a little bit now.”

It is essential for Daniels not to rush things, because that would mean the ability to sign Hamilton would be impaired. The outfielder is set to become one of the main stars of this offseason’s Hot Stove League. He hit .285 with 43 home runs and 128 RBI last year, but also dealt with vision problems late in the season.
