Adam LaRoche in discussions with Red Sox

The Boston Red Sox are talking to Adam LaRoche as a backup plan in case they cannot sign Mike Napoli.

The Boston Red Sox seem to be most interested in Mike Napoli for their first base vacancy. But in case that falls through, they already have Adam LaRoche on the phone, according to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports.

The 33-year-old LaRoche has spent the previous two seasons with the Washington Nationals after signing a two-year deal worth $15 million. 2011 was abysmal for LaRoche as he struggled at the plate in only 43 games due to labrum problems. 2012 was much better; the healthy slugger hit .271/.343/.510 with 33 home runs, placing sixth in MVP voting and winning Gold Glove and Silver Slugger awards.

The Nationals' recent trade for Denard Span could complicate a potential return to the Washington for LaRoche, so the Red Sox could seize upon the opportunity. If LaRoche does sign with the Red Sox, it would be a return of sorts to his old stomping grounds. LaRoche spent just six games in Beantown during the 2009 season, heading to the Sox from the Pirates before being shipped to the Braves in exchange for Casey Kotchman.

The Red Sox are in dire need for offense after their blockbuster deal with the Dodgers that sent Adrian Gonzalez and others out west. LaRoche would not replace the production Gonzalez once provided, but his steady bat could help hold down the fort until the Sox can reload again.
