Tapizar and jockey Corey Nakatani assumed command of the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile at the top of the stretch and put away his rivals within the final quarter mile for an unexpectedly easy win at Santa Anita. Race favorite Shackleford broke poorly from the gate, made up ground to put himself into contention on the far turn but faded badly in the stretch.
