Breeders’ Cup 2012 Turf Sprint Results: Mizdirection closes for the win

The filly Mizdirection makes a big run from the back of the pack to win at Santa Anita.

Jim Rome’s filly Mizdirection stormed to the lead in the final strides to nip Unbridled’s Note at the wire to win the 2012 Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint. The Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint is typically run at five furlongs but when the event is held at Santa Anita it is run at six and a half furlongs on their unique downhill turf course. Prior to the Breeders’ Cup, Mizdirection was a perfect 2-for-2 on the downhill course. Now she’s 3-for-3 with a Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup win.

Reneessgotzip finished third while Great Mills rounded out the superfecta in a ridiculously fast Turf Sprint. The early leaders went 21.11 for the opening quarter and an unheard-of 42.39 for the half, the perfect pace to set up the off-the-pace Mizdirection in the final furlongs.

Mizdirection is a 4-year-old filly by Mizzen Mast out of a Clever Trick mare (Deceptive), trained by Mike Puype and ridden by Mike Smith.
