In a race billed as a showdown between Wise Dan and Excelebration (IRE), it was the American, Wise Dan, that came out on top, stamping him the best horse in America. Wise Dan broke well from the gate but was in no hurry to go to the lead in the early stages, settling into a good rhythm along the rail. At the top of the lane, Wise Dan kicked clear of the field and rolled home through a final quarter-mile of 22.97 with little challenge from his rivals. 2011 Kentucky Derby winner Animal Kingdom finished second, Obviously (IRE) finished third, and Excelebration finished a disappointing fourth.
