Fort Larned broke well from the gate, took the lead into the first turn, stretched his lead to a couple of lengths on the backstretch, and then survived a relentless duel all the way down the stretch to beat Mucho Macho Man win the Breeders’ Cup Classic, the richest horse race in North America with a $5 million purse.

After a heartbreaking defeat in the 2011 Classic at Churchill Downs, Bob Baffert’s Game On Dude, the 6/5 favorite, came back for revenge at his home track, Santa Anita Park, where he was a perfect five-for-five in races over the Santa Anita main track, including two victories in the Grade 1 Awesome Again (2011 and 2012) and a win in the Grade 2 San Antonio Stakes. Game on Dude finished out of the money.
Fort Larned is a four-year-old colt by E Dubai out of a Broad Brush mare (Arlucea), trained by Ian Wilkes and ridden by Brian Hernandez, Jr.
