A’s sign Bartolo Colon to 1-year contract

The Oakland A’s have come to terms with Bartolo Colon on new deal, signing the currently suspended pitcher to a one-year contract.

Gary A. Vasquez-US PRESSWIRE

The Oakland Athletics have reportedly signed Bartolo Colon to a new contract, despite the pitcher's current suspension for violation of Major League Baseball's banned-substances policy. The exact terms of the one-year deal are not known.

Colon recieved the 50-game suspension after testing positive for testosterone. Suspended since late August, he will miss the first five games of the upcoming season. Prior to the suspension, the former Cy Young Award winner went 10-9 in 24 starts in his first season with the A’s, posting a 3.43 ERA in his 15th season in the majors. He had 5.38 strikeouts per nine innings and held opponents to a .266 batting average. Colon will be 40 for the 2013 season.

Oakland's starting rotation is in a bit of flux. Dallas Braden opted for free agency, and free agent Brandon McCarthy's future is unclear following the surgery stemming from being hit in the head with a line drive in the ALDS.
