Yankees re-sign Mariano Rivera on 1-year, $10 million deal

Mo will return to the Bronx to close for one more year.

Otto Greule Jr

The New York Yankees have come to terms with veteran closer Mariano Rivera, re-signing the right-hander on a one-year, $10 million contract, per CBS Sports. The future first-ballot Hall of Famer will take on the closer role in the Bronx for his 16th full season. Baseball's all-time saves leader, Rivera owns an incredible 2.21 ERA in 18 seasons with the Yankees.

The deal also includes performance incentives that could push Rivera’s salary north of $10 million, but those terms are unknown at present. It seems reasonable to speculate they could push the right-hander’s earnings in the range of $15 million -- his salary for the past five seasons.

After almost two decades without a prolonged stint on the disabled list, the 43-year-old Rivera missed most of the 2012 season after suffering an ACL injury while shagging fly balls in early May. The right-hander said at the time of the injury he was determined to return next season, wavered on the idea as the season went on, then ultimately decided to return.

New York has now locked up Rivera, Hiroki Kuroda and Andy Pettitte (median age: 40) on one-year deals, solidifying the rotation and bullpen for next season but leaving the door open for big changes in 2014.
