Red Sox hire Victor Rodriguez as assistant hitting coach

A veteran of the Boston organization for almost two decades joins the Major League staff for the first time.

After 18 years with the Boston Red Sox organization in several capacities, Victor Rodriguez has been promoted to their Major League staff as assistant hitting coach.

Rodriguez was Boston’s minor league coordinator during the past six years, and has also worked as Latin field coordinator, among several other roles.

Boston is going for an unorthodox approach to hitting, considering that two coaches are necessary for best results.

“I think the most important thing is when you consider an assistant hitting coach is they’ve got to be aligned in their overall thoughts as far as hitting goes,” Red Sox manager John Farrell said. “We can’t have conflicting messages to the individuals.”

Rodriguez was signed by the Baltimore Orioles in 1977 and played professional baseball for 19 years, including 17 games in the Majors. After almost two decades with Boston, he is now bound to joining their big league team as a coach.
