Maicer Izturis signs 3-year deal with Blue Jays

Maicer Izturis was long one of baseball's best secrets, an infield Swiss Army knife for almost a decade with the Angels. He was rarely very good, but he was also rarely bad. And if you look around at the rosters of other major-league teams, you can see how bad reserve infielders can be.

The Toronto Blue Jays took advantage of the newfound freedom of Izturis, locking him up for three years and $10 million.

Izturis isn’t a starter, or at least he’s never been a consistent starter, and he’s 32, so it’s somewhat curious to see a player like that lock down a multi-year deal. But if you go by FanGraphs’ valuation, there’s never been a three-year stretch of Izturis’s career where he’s been worth less than $10 million. It’s not like the Jays got a huge bargain, but they’re pretty aware what they just picked up, and how it can be valuable.
