Alderson on David Wright extension: ‘Conversations are ongoing’

The New York Mets are currently discussing a long-term contract extension with David Wright.

New York Mets general manager Sandy Alderson says "conversations are ongoing" regarding a long-term extension for third baseman David Wright, according to ESPN New York.

“Conversations are ongoing. Other than that, I really can’t say much. One of the things that we have done is we have agreed with David’s representatives that there not be a great deal of discussion publicly about where we are. So in deference to that understanding with the other side, I respectfully decline to comment.”

He later added that the discussions are more engaged than last year's failed negotiations with former shortstop Jose Reyes. Reyes ended up signing with the Miami Marlins.

2012 was another frustrating season in Queens, as the Mets finished with fewer than 80 wins for the fourth straight year. Wright was a bright spot though, playing a full, healthy season and hitting a robust .306/.391/.492 with 64 extra-base hits and 93 RBIs. The Mets recently exercised their option with Wright for 2013, worth $16 million, but have been vocal about their desire to sign him beyond next season. If they cannot work out an extension, it is possible they could entertain trade offers for the 29-year-old six-time All-Star.
