Kevin Frandsen reportedly close to deal with Phillies

The Philadelphia Phillies are close to a deal to bring back utility player Kevin Frandsen.

Howard Smith-US PRESSWIRE

The Philadelphia Phillies are reportedly close to bringing back utility man Kevin Frandsen, according to Jerry Crasnick. There is no word yet on the specifics of the deal, but it is assumed to be for one season.

The 30-year-old Frandsen has spent the last two seasons in the Phillies’ system after signing a minor-league deal with them in March of 2011. He spent the 2011 season mostly toiling with their Triple-A team in Lehigh Valley and did not play in the majors. He began the 2012 season back at Lehigh Valley, where he hit over .300. He earned a call-up to the big-league team at the end of July and became the Phillies’ starting third baseman, hitting .338/.383/.451 with 10 doubles in just over 200 plate appearances.

That does not mean the Phillies see Frandsen as their answer at third base, though. They will still most likely pursue a more stable option at the hot corner, using Frandsen as a utility player and bench bat.
