Michael Bourn expected to draw interest from Nats, Phillies

Michael Bourn is expected to decline his qualifying offer from the Atlanta Braves, making him a free agent. When he does, the Washington Nationals and Philadelphia Phillies will likely come calling.

Free agent center fielder Michael Bourn will likely be receiving numerous calls this winter from prospective suitors. The Washington Nationals and Philadelphia Phillies will be among the teams interested, according to David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal Constitution. Bourn is expected to decline the qualifying offer made to him by the Atlanta Braves and seek a multi-year deal in free agency.

The Nationals have been discussed as a possible destination for Bourn for quite some time. The Nats had the best record in baseball at 98-64, but they could use some help in the outfield. Bryce Harper was the primary center fielder for most of the season, but the Nats think he is much better suited for right field. Getting Bourn would allow Harper to slide over to right, and Jayson Werth could move to left field. Michael Morse can then take over at first base for Adam LaRoche, who is likely to depart via free agency.

The Phillies have made it known that they are looking for a center fielder and have already spoken with B.J. Upton’s agent. They drafted Bourn in the fourth round back in 2003, so signing him would be bringing him back to where everything began.
