Saints vs. Giants, Week 14: Scale of Saints loss casts shadow on remaining games

The New Orleans Saints lost on Sunday, but it was how they lost that’s likely to haunt fans.

Wesley Hitt

The New Orleans Saints fell to 5-8 in a high-profile, lopsided loss to the defending champion New York Giants. 52-27 was the final score, but that wasn't the worst of the news. To hear SB Nation's Saints blog Canal Street Chronicles tell it, that game was the death knell for the Saints' 2012 season:

Sorry to say, Saints fans, but that will do it for the 2012 season. Sure there are three more games left to play but who are we kidding. Time to pack this bad boy up and put The Season that Care Forgot away for good.

With five teams between New Orleans and the last playoff spot in the NFC, saying that the Saints’ window to the playoffs is shut is not so unreasonable. The conditions of the loss to New York make it especially difficult for Saints fans to think much of their team’s chances.

New Orleans committed four turnovers, gave up 287 kick return yards, including one touchdown, and allowed 17 unanswered points in the fourth quarter. Drew Brees threw more interceptions than he did touchdowns for the third time this season, and the defense had zero sacks and only two tackles for a loss. Put all of that together and you have a very difficult loss for fans to deal with. Canal Street Chronicles is the ideal Saints fans community, so head over there and join the conversation.
