Reds, DBacks, Indians swing 3-team trade

The Reds get Shin-Soo Choo, the Indians get Drew Stubbs and the Diamondbacks pick-up Lars Anderson in a three-team, nine-player deal pulled off Tuesday night.

The Cincinnati Reds, Cleveland Indians and Arizona Diamondbacks have executed a massive three-team trade with nine players changing cities, per a Diamondbacks' press release.

The Arizona Diamondbacks (@dbacks) have acquired shortstop Didi Gregorius (@DidiG18), left-handed pitcher Tony Sipp (@SippTony) and first baseman Lars Anderson from the Cleveland Indians in exchange for right-handed pitchers Trevor Bauer, Matt Albers and Bryan Shaw, according to D-backs Executive Vice President & General Manager Kevin Towers.

Here is the rundown:

Reds get:

OF Shin-Soo Choo
IF Jason Donald
$3.5 million

Indians get:

P Trevor Bauer
P Matt Albers
P Bryan Shaw
OF Drew Stubbs

Diamondbacks get:

SS Didi Gregorius
1B Lars Anderson
P Tony Sipp

The deal satisfies pressing needs for each team. The Reds desperately needed offense at the top of the batting order. Reds’ lead off hitters in 2012 hit an embarrassing .208/.254/.327. Choo gives them a potent bat at the top of the order, as he has hit .289/.381/.465 for his career. He will likely play center field for the Reds, a position he has only played in 10 games as a major leaguer. The cash balances out the difference between Stubbs’ and Choo’s projected salaries, according to Ken Rosenthal.

The Indians got an arm with tremendous upside, which is exactly what they needed. Bauer was the Diamondbacks’ minor league Pitcher of the Year in 2012 and the third overall pick in the 2011 draft. Stubbs has been the Reds’ everyday center fielder for over three seasons, but his bat has steadily regressed each year. He hit a career-low .213/.277/.333 in 2012, but he is known as a strong defender in center and has stolen 110 bases in his career.

Didi Gregorius is the Diamondbacks’ new shortstop of the future, and he could start for them as soon as this coming spring. Gregorius is known for his elite defense at shortstop, displaying great range and a strong arm. He hit .265/.324/.393 between double-A and triple-A this season.
