Anibal Sanchez might have a deal with Chicago Cubs

Wait, what?

Jesse Johnson-US PRESSWIRE

Finally, a mystery team with some real mystery! Anibal Sanchez was probably the second-best starting pitcher on the free-agent market this offseason, and with Zack Greinke signing with the Dodgers, he was the best pitcher left. The Blue Jays could use another starter. So could the Rangers, Tigers, Royals, Angels, Phillies, Brewers ... you get the idea. The bidding was going to be fierce. And the winner is ...

The Cubs. The Chicago Cubs. According to Bob Nightengale, the Cubs will sign Sanchez to a five-year deal worth a reported $75 million. The deal is close to the one C.J. Wilson signed last winter, for comparison.

Sanchez had a 3.86 ERA last season between the Marlins and the Tigers, good for a 105 ERA+. In 2011, Sanchez had a 3.67 ERA, putting him at a 106 ERA+, so he's been consistent over the last two years.

The Cubs are a mystery team not because they didn’t need the pitching, but because they aren’t exactly contending. Sanchez could have helped a team finalize its rotation, but now he’s going to help one rebuild it.

Anibal Sanchez on the Cubs. Huh. Didn’t see that one coming.

Edit: Rumormonger fight! Rumormonger fight!
