R.A. Dickey trade: Mets, Jays reach agreement, Tuesday deadline to extend contract

The Toronto Blue Jays are set to acquire R.A. Dickey, but only if the two sides can agree to an extension within the next 72 hours.

Alex Trautwig

The New York Mets and Toronto Blue Jays have agreed in principle to a trade that would send right-handed starting pitcher R.A. Dickey to Toronto, but the deal is contingent on Dickey agreeing to an extension with his potential new club, via Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.

The right-handed starter, 38, is currently signed to a contract that runs through 2013 for just $5 million. The Jays have a negotiating window of 72 hours to lock up the ace, reports Rosenthal.

Dickey, who won the NL Cy Young award for his sensational performance in 2012, becomes one of a handful of other pitchers to have won the Cy Young award and start the following season with a different team. The right-handed ace is the first since Roger Clemens, who ironically won the Cy Young award with Dickey's new team, the Toronto Blue Jays, and then was traded to the New York Yankees.
