Twins reportedly sign Mike Pelfrey

The Minnesota Twins have reportedly signed right-hander Mike Pelfrey to a one-year deal worth up to $5.5 million.

The Minnesota Twins have reportedly inked free agent righty Mike Pelfrey to a one-year deal worth $4 million, with up to $1.5 million in incentives, according to Jon Heyman. Pelfrey is recovering from Tommy John surgery and is expected to be ready to go by Opening Day.

Pelfrey started only three games for the New York Mets in 2012 before suffering a torn UCL and undergoing Tommy John surgery. He became a fixture in the Mets’ rotation in 2008, and between then and 2011 he threw more than 180 innings a season and posted a 4.27 ERA. He was a solid innings-eater despite his lackluster 12.9 strikeout percentage.

Pelfrey made $5.68 million with the Mets last season and was non-tendered last month. Instead of taking the risk of tendering him and giving him a raise, they decided to let him head to free agency.

The Twins’ starting rotation was one of the main reasons why the team won only 66 games last season. Only Scott Diamond started more than 20 games. The Twins are hoping Pelfrey can recover from surgery and return to the form that had him starting 30+ plus games.
