Blue Jays, R.A. Dickey reach extension agreement

Toronto has extended the knuckleballer for two years and $25 million, completing their trade with the Mets.

The Toronto Blue Jays have agreed to terms on a contract extension with knuckleballer R.A. Dickey, thus completing the blockbuster trade with the New York Mets. The two-year, $25 million extension will keep Dickey in Toronto through the 2015 season and pay the right-hander $10 million each of the next three years.

While the Blue Jays and Mets had agreed to a trade in principle over the weekend, Toronto had until 2:00pm ET on Tuesday to come to terms on a two-year extension with the 38-year-old right-hander, or the deal would have been off.

The trade, as last reported, will send Dickey, catcher Josh Thole and a prospect to Toronto for top prospect and catcher Travis d`Arnaud, right-hander Noah Syndergaard, catcher John Buck, and a to-be-determined prospect.

Dickey had sought a two-year, $25 million extension from the Mets but New York would not offer him more than $20 million. The 2012 NL Cy Young winner will receive a $5 million signing bonus in addition to the standing $5 million contract he has for the 2013 season.

Dickey is currently in Florida to undergo a physical that will finalize the deal.
