Jim Boeheim became just the third coach in Division I history to win 900 games on Monday night with Syracuse’s 72-68 win over Detroit at the Carrier Dome. Mike Krzyzewski has the most career wins, at 936 and counting, but the Syracuse legend is just two wins behind Bob Knight for No. 2 on the all-time wins list.

What makes Boeheim’s 900 wins unique is that they have all been at Syracuse, a record for most wins at any one school. Boeheim is a Syracuse lifer, having played for the Orange and served as an assistant coach before taking over the program in 1976. Since then, he has taken the program to new heights, turning it into one of the top programs in the country, advancing to three Final Fours and winning the national championship in 2003.
Detroit hung around in the game early on, but a 7-0 run by Syracuse late in the first half turned a seven-point lead into a lopsided 27-13 score. Syracuse took a 40-21 lead into halftime and never let the game get back into single digits until late when the Titans got hot, but they couldn’t get within four as the Orange held on for the victory.
James Southerland led the way for Syracuse with 22 points off the bench. Michael Carter-Williams did his part dishing the ball, picking up 10 assists, while five Syracuse players had at least four rebounds as the Orange dominated the boards.
It wasn’t the smoothest of finishes for Syracuse, but it was enough for a win and a pretty spectacular one at that -- No. 900.
