Santiago Casilla, Giants agree to extension

The San Francisco Giants have agreed to a three-year, $15 million extension with Santiago Casilla.

The San Francisco Giants gained a bit more long-term stability in their bullpen, agreeing to a three-year extension with reliever Santiago Casilla. The contract, reportedly worth $15 million, will include a vesting option that can become a club option for a fourth year.

Casilla, who was eligible for arbitration for the third time this winter, was a workhorse out of the Giants’ bullpen in 2012. The 32-year-old right-hander tossed 63⅓ innings for the world champions in 73 games, allowing 55 hits and 22 walks while whiffing 55 batters. He did experience some difficulty in keeping the ball in the park, as he allowed eight jacks, or 1.1 per nine innings pitched.

During the postseason, Casilla worked overtime, pitching seven frames in 11 games. All of the damage against him came during the NLDS against the Cardinals, who touched Casilla for six hits and two runs in 3⅓ innings. He did not allow another run during the postseason.
