Indians announce Mark Reynolds

The Cleveland Indians have made official their deal with Mark Reynolds for one year and $6 million. Reynolds could also earn up to $1.5 million in performance bonuses.

Joe Nicholson-US PRESSWIRE

On Tuesday, the Cleveland Indians announced the signing of Mark Reynolds to a one-year deal worth $6 million. Reynolds could earn an extra $1.5 million if he meets certain performance benchmarks.

"We feel Mark helps provide balance to our lineup," Indians general manager Chris Antonetti said. "He's a right-handed hitter with power that has the ability to get on base, and we feel is a very good defender at first base. We think Mark will help improve our offense and I think the power that he brings was especially attractive for us."

The Indians see Reynolds as their primary first baseman, though he will likely see a number of at-bats at DH as well. Antonetti even left open the possibility of Reynolds sliding back to third base on occasion.

The Indians sorely need offensive firepower and are hoping Reynolds can provide it. 2012 was a down year for the slugger, as he managed to hit .221/.335/.429 with 23 home runs, his lowest total since 2007. That output was much better than what the Indians saw from their power positions last season though, as Cleveland’s first basemen posted a collective .675 OPS and their designated hitters managed only a .702 OPS.
