Often critical of David Stern and the NBA league office, Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban had no problem with the $250,000 fine the San Antonio Spurs received as a result of benching their starters for a nationally televised game against the Miami Heat this past Thursday, via Eddie Sefko of The Dallas News.

Dallas Mavericks Mark Cuban agrees with the NBA fining the San Antonio Spurs organization $250,000 for benching of their starters against Miami, but offers an interesting take on the main reason why.

While Cuban understands why San Antonio decided to rest their starters the way they did, the outspoken owner also sees where the league is coming from, saying perhaps the fine should have been even higher.
The main reason why Cuban agreed is because television revenue is the NBA’s biggest customer, so keeping them happy is in the best interest of the league.
“That is the driver for all things financial in sports. Period, end of story. We are not 10 years ago where TV is just another source of income. That is the money train. Period, end of story, no questions asked.”
Even while backing the league, Cuban never denied the Mavericks wouldn’t do the same thing as San Antonio did (and has done in the past). Even joking the NBA would fine him ten times more than the $250,000 it fined the Spurs.
