NBCSN president of programming had ‘no indication’ lockout would reach January

NBC exec clearly frustrated with continuing work stoppage.

Andrew Weber-US PRESSWIRE

Chad Finn of the Boston Globe has a story out today well worth the time of sports media junkies such as myself. Particularly interesting is a quote from Jon Miller, NBC Sports Network’s President of Programming, on the continuing NHL lockout.

“We never had any indication that this situation with the NHL was going to last until January. It was always our understanding that this was going to be a tweak and a fix.”

The NBC Sports Net president, who has had to deal without more than 30 games with the National Hockey League’s inexcusable third extended labor dispute under Gary Bettman, admitted to being “frustrated” with the situation.

Who wouldn’t be, given the league has left them with extremely subpar programming that has highlighted some of the more seedy areas of NBCSN’s schedule. For example, when the network was allowed to show Sunday Night Football during President Obama’s press conference at Newtown, it interrupted NBCSN’s Sunday night schedule of hunting and gun shows.

Whether you want to believe that quote from Miller is up to you, but it’s easy to understand NBCSN’s frustration at not having its most prized programming when it needs it most.
