Geovany Soto, Rangers agree to one-year deal

Geovany Soto, whom Texas non-tendered on Friday, agreed to a one-year contract with the club, pending a physical.

Kevin Jairaj-US PRESSWIRE

The Texas Rangers have reportedly reached an agreement on a one-year deal with catcher Geovany Soto, whom the team non-tendered at the November 30 deadline. Soto's new contract will become official if he passes a physical, and it will likely be less than the $4.3 million he earned in 2012.

The 29-year-old backstop has had a roller-coaster career at the plate, and his stats have fallen off significantly from his 2010 campaign of .280/.393/.497. Between 2011 and 2012, Soto has hit .215/.293/.381 but has popped 28 home runs. The Rangers acquired the former Rookie of the Year from the Chicago Cubs in a deadline deal, but playing in the friendly hitting confines of Arlington did not revive Soto's bat; he hit .196/.253/.338 following the trade in 164 plate appearances.

Soto has battled injuries throughout his career; he has spent time on the disabled list in every season since 2009. In 2012, he underwent meniscus surgery and missed 32 days.
