San Diego Padres re-sign Jason Marquis

The veteran right-hander has reportedly re-upped with the Padres on a one-year deal.

Jake Roth-US PRESSWIRE

The San Diego Padres have reportedly reached an agreement to bring right-hander Jason Marquis back to Petco Park for a full season, per CBS Sports. The contract is for just the one year and will pay the right-hander a base salary of $3 million.

The 34-year-old right-hander began the 2012 season with the Minnesota Twins but was granted his release in late May after struggling his way through seven starts. Marquis immediately signed on with the Padres and put up a much-improved 4.04 ERA and 2.82 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 15 starts before fracturing his left wrist in late August.

At one point a top prospect in the Braves organization, Marquis has never been dominant in the Majors, only twice posting an earned-run average under 4.00. Now a 13-year big-league veteran, the right-hander owns a 112-109 win-loss-record and a 4.60 earned-run average in 289 career starts.

The deal, as always, is still pending a physical.
