Miguel Tejada signs minor league deal with Royals

The Royals have decided to take a flier on veteran infielder Miguel Tejada, signing the 38-year-old to a minor league deal on Monday.

The Kansas City Royals have agreed to a minor league contract with free agent shortstop Miguel Tejada, the team announced. The deal, first reported by AP's Dionisio Soldevila, includes an invitation to spring training and could be worth $1.1 million if makes the team, CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports.

Tejada, 38, spent a short stint with the Baltimore Orioles' Triple-A affiliate this year after spending the 2011 season with the San Francisco Giants. Most recently a full-time player in 2010, he's since struggled badly both in the minors and the majors, making it somewhat of a surprise that he's garnered the intrigue of a big league organization.

Heyman says he Royals were apparently impressed by what they saw in Tejada during recent workouts,, which explains the willingness to take a no-risk flier on the veteran. Given that it’s a minor league deal, none of the $1.1 million is guaranteed, essentially giving Kansas City a free chance to watch Tejada play before handing him a roster spot in March.
