Marlins ‘actively shopping’ Yunel Escobar

The Marlins are actively shopping newly-acquired, troubled shortstop Yunel Escobar. Oakland, Tampa Bay, Chicago and possibly the Yankees are interested.

The Marlins may not be interested in trading away right-hander Ricky Nolasco, but that does not mean the club is done exploring the trade market. Miami is reportedly "actively shopping" new acquisition Yunel Escobar, per MLB.com, and several clubs are said to be showing interest.

The troubled shortstop -- who was penciled in as Miami's third baseman for 2013 -- is drawing interest from the Oakland Athletics, Tampa Bay Rays, Chicago Cubs and possibly the New York Yankees, though ESPN reports that the Bronx Bombers are not in on negotiations.

Though details of the trade negotiations are sparse at the moment, it is believed that the Athletics have offered minor leaguers in exchange for Escobar, per the San Francisco Chronicle, and that the Marlins could be in late-stage trade talks with at least two of the interested clubs, according to the Miami Herald.

After a strong first full season in Toronto in 2011, Escobar struggled this past season, hitting just .253/.300/.344 in 145 games. His on-field struggles were only amplified by his issues off the field, with Escobar receiving a three-game suspension late in the season for displaying a homophobic slur in Spanish on his eye-black.
