R.A. Dickey rumors: Several clubs calling on knuckleballer

At least eight clubs have talked with the Mets about a possible trade for the knuckleballer.

The Mets are still working on a contract extension with knuckleballer R.A. Dickey, but New York’s front office might shift gears soon as more and more clubs begin to show interest in trading for the 2012 NL Cy Young winner.

While it was speculated yesterday that the Kansas City Royals were making calls on the right-hander, now the Orioles, Rangers, Dodgers, Diamondbacks, Red Sox, Blue Jays and Nationals are all believed to have talked to the Mets about acquiring Dickey, reports CBS Sports’ Jon Heyman.

The Nats are probably out of the running for Dickey since acquiring right-hander Dan Haren this morning, but that still leaves seven teams on the table with interest in the 38-year-old.

The Mets are asking for a package of top prospects in return for Dickey, and are most interested in catching and outfield help, of which the Blue Jays probably have the strongest candidates.

As his current contract stands, Dickey will earn $5 million pitching for the Mets in 2013. The two sides were rumored to be close to a two-year extension once the club locked up David Wright long-term last weekend, but talks have continued to go nowhere.
