Sean Burnett reportedly signs with Angels

The Los Angeles Angels bolstered their bullpen on Wednesday, signing lefty Sean Burnett.

Brad Mills-US PRESSWIRE

The Los Angeles Angels reportedly shored up the back end of their bullpen on Wednesday, signing veteran left-hander Sean Burnett, according to Alden Gonzalez of MLB.com. It is reported to be a two-year deal worth $8 million, with a club option for a third year worth $4.5 million or a $500k buyout.

Burnett spent his last three-and-a-half seasons with the Washington Nationals, posting an impressive 2.81 ERA in 245 relief appearances for the Nats. 2012 was a strong year for him, as he notched a 2.38 ERA with a gaudy 4.75 strikeout-to-walk ratio.

Burnett slots in as the Angels' key left-handed set-up man, as they signed free agent Ryan Madson late last month to serve as closer. The two will work with incumbent closer Ernesto Frieri to shut down the late innings. The Angels seemed to do well here to get two quality arms at the cost of $8 million against their 2013 budget, as other relievers of similar ilk — Jeremy Affeldt, Randy Choate, Brandon League, Jonathan Broxton — have received three-year deals for more money.
