Nate Schierholtz reportedly signs with Cubs

The Chicago Cubs have reportedly inked a deal with free-agent outfielder Nate Schierholtz.

The Chicago Cubs have reportedly agreed to a one-year deal with free agent outfielder Nate Schierholtz, according to ESPN's Jerry Crasnick. Schierholtz was non-tendered by the Philadelphia Phillies last Friday, making him a free agent.

The 28-year-old Schierholtz has spent most of his six-year career with the San Francisco Giants, but was traded to the Phillies last July in the Hunter Pence deal. For the season, he hit .257/.321/.407 with six home runs. That's in line with his career numbers of .270/.319/.409. He has been almost exclusively used as a left-handed bench bat, starting only 273 of his 540 games played. He has been protected from left-handed pitching, seeing only 291 career plate appearances against south-paws out of a total of 1389.

Schierholtz will likely remain a role player with his new club, as the Cubs feature Alfonso Soriano and David DeJesus in the outfield corners and the speedy Tony Campana in center field.
